Joy Behar is an actress, comedian, and writer from the United States. She is a co-host on ABC’s The View, a daytime discussion show. From 2009 to 2011, she hosted The Joy Behar Show on HLN, and from 2012 to August 2013, she presented Joy Behar: Say Anything! on Current TV. Late Night Joy, Behar’s most recent weekly late-night chat show, premiered on TLC in 2015.

Early years Behar was born Josephine Occhiuto in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to an Italian Catholic family. Her mother, Rose, was a seamstress, and her father, Gino Occhiuto, was a truck driver for Coca-Cola. Behar earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Queens College in 1964 and a master’s degree in English education from Stony Brook University in 1966. From the late 1960s until the early 1970s, she taught English at Lindenhurst Senior High School in Lindenhurst, New York.


In the early 1980s, Behar began her career in show business as a receptionist and later as a producer on Good Morning America. In 1999, Behar published Joy Shtick – Or What is the Existential Vacuum and Does It Come with Attachments?, a collection of funny essays and anecdotes. Sheetzucacapoopoo: My Kind of Dog, a children’s book published in 2006, was also written by her. Behar’s comedy frequently incorporates her Italian ancestry.
